Fiji Country Profile

If you fly directly east from northern Queensland for 2500 kilometres, you will be over Fiji. Looking down, you would see more than 800 islands – some large enough to hold thousands of people, others are very small. About 100 of these island are inhabited. If you flew down to 1323 metres while over the island of Viti Levu, you might hit the top of Tomanivi, Fiji’s highest peak. South-east of Tomanivi is Suva, the capital of Fiji. Main cities include Nadi, Sigatoka and Lautoka on Viti Levu and Labasa and Savusavu on Vanua Levu.

Fiji was populated for more than 3000 years before contact with white people. Most people living in Fiji had come from other islands in Melanesia, although some came from Polynesia and Micronesia. Villages developed their own traditions and language...

Classic Cambodia Travel

Flow and pacing – the heart and soul of any winning trip – are often overlooked in international travel. This holds especially true when experiencing the Angkor temples in Cambodia.

Most visitors allow only a couple days to explore these magnificent stone monuments. In no time, theyre thoroughly templed-out and do not gain a meaningful understanding of the civilization behind their construction. And more importantly, they havent had fun!

Smart travelers should devote a week to Cambodia, a nation reemerging as a must-see travel destination. Getting there has never been easier via newly paved roads from Thailand and Vietnam and lots of daily flights into Siem Reap and Phnom Penh.

Over the course of many trips, Ive compiled a roadmap for experiencing Cambodia over the course ...

Travel destination in India

Delhi –
Laid out by British architect Edwin Lutyens, the Indian capital is a striking modern metropolis. A gracious contrast to Old Delhi’s winding streets, the grand avenues and stately buildings of New Delhi are rich with history and culture, from Gandhi’s Delhi home (and the site of his assassination) to the tomb of Humayun, a complex of Mughal buildings reminiscent of the Taj Mahal. Chaotic traffic is best left to the locals. Negotiate a good price for taxis or travel on the new Delhi Metro.

Taj Mahal Agra
Built by a grief stricken Emperor Shah Jehan as a memorial to his beloved wife Mumtaj Mahal , the Taj Mahal has a structural elegance and pristine beauty that has been rarely matched .

It took 20 thousand men nearly 22 years to build the mausoleum and the fines...

What’s Wrong With The United Arab Emirates?

When I arrived here three years ago, I had never lived outside Australia. I had no real idea of Arab culture or Islam and had a naeve expectation that a country with incomprehensible wealth would have “bought off” all its problems. I now realise that contrary to my expectations, money creates its own problems here as elsewhere.

I had already experienced the problems of welfare dependency among indigenous Australians who receive “sit-down money” literally so they can sit on their black butts and do nothing. Why should I have expected it to be different here?

The truth is, since discovering vast oil wealth a few decades ago, the majority of the 830,000 odd Emiratis have spoiled themselves to the stage that they have now become largely moribund...

Leaving Guam On A Jet Plane

The equipment we maintained at the Naval Communications Station on Guam was the latest and most sophisticated available in one sense and not so complex in another. But it was what the Navy had at the time and they used it to spy on the world: secret encrypted messages, Russian missile launchings, radar communications sites and a multitude of others, among them, simple, almost archaic Chinese digital communications. Then there were our own people: the news media, telephone and short wave communications, and others.

The reason myself, Juan Trujillo, John Proza, Orion Larson and others were there is the equipment would fail at times and the operators would call down to the Electronics Shop in the basement and ask one of us to come to the third floor and get it going.

The first...
